Crownlengthening guides

Balancing the asethetics of natural teeth without using veneers

Crownlenghtening guides for precise recontouring

Planning is an invaluable step in any treatment, regardless of complexity. This young patient has no functional or biological problems, and has beautiful and healthy natural teeth. Here is how dr. Pierre Layan (France) approached planning and execution.

  1. Smile Design is used on a selective area - the gingiva only - as we only want to optimise the gummy smile, balance irregular zeniths and proportions.
  2. Once library is selected, we do a quick measure
  3. Having the measurements on the Smile Design allows us to do a quick check if the design is executable. We superimpose dicom and scans directly in the Smilecloud Review and measure in 3D
  4. Once this check is done, we know that treatment plan is valid and we continue to the 3D design

Aldough the teeth will not be touched, a Functional design is necessary in order to achieve the ideal library position. Following the Functional design, the technician then creates the crownlengthening guide following the exact contour or the zeniths.

Final review

Once the guide is designed, Dr. Layan does a quick final check of the project in Review making sure that everything is designed according to the plan. As everything is ok, he downloads the guide, prints it in his office and carries out the surgery with an elecrosurge.

This was an open flap surgery as the bone also needed recontouring. The crownlengthening guides are always designed with a 3mm top margin to serve as reference and guidance when the flap is open.
